Debate-Ed host a debating competition every year which is open to students from Years 7 to 9. Schools from across Shropshire are welcome to register to attend.

Students are able to test their skills against each other and have fun debating a variety of topics.

On The Day

Topics are only announced on the day so no preparation is required beforehand. However, it is always a good idea to brush up on your general knowledge.

Students do not need to have prior experience of debating to take part in the day as full instructions are given. The competition is run using parliamentary debating style (the same style used at many university competitions). This means that students compete in pairs as a team and that there are 2 teams for the prosecution and 2 teams for the opposition. Students do not get to choose whether they are opposition or proposition as positions are randomly allocated.

The competition has 3 rounds with a different topic for each round followed by a final where the top 4 teams compete for our trophy. There are also prizes awarded throughout the day, including prizes for Best Team and Best Speaker.

Top Tips

  • Speak clearly and concisely. Don’t be tempted to waffle!

  • Think critically about the topic you are given.

  • Make sure you use your preparation time well and have brainstormed at least 3 points to include in your speech.

  • Always have an example to illustrate your point!

  • Work with your partner to generate ideas – two heads are better than one!
